CARL STEIGER OBITUARY

Carl Emil Steiger, 89, former president of Deltox Rug Co.,and a business, education, and political leader in Oshkosh,Wisconsin, and the state of Wisconsin for many years, died October 22, in Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh.

Services were Friday in Trinity Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles Cason. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Fremont.

Steiger was born June 16, 1896, in Fremont. He married Ruth Storms Jan. 26, 1924, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Constance R. Dempsey, Santa Fe, N.M., Ann E. Haberstroh, Santa Barbara, Calif. and Mary M. Garman, Sundance, Wyo.; one son, Donald C. Steiger, Bentonville, Ark., one sister, Sophie Roth, Oshkosh; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Congressman William A. Steiger.

Memorials have been established to the Oshkosh YMCA, the Oshkosh Foundation, Trinity Episcopal Church and the Paine Art Center and Arboretum.

He attended Oshkosh schools and graduated from St. John's Military Academy, Delafield, in 1915. He attended the University of Wisconsin.

He was a first lieutenant during his service in World War I and then was associated with his father in the Deltox Rug Co. for 50 years, becoming the firms president. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Steiger was an alderman in Oshkosh from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of the Oshkosh Common Council from 1961 to 1964. He was a former member of the Oshkosh Police and Fire Commission, one of the charter members of the Oshkosh YMCA, a former director and former president of the Oshkosh Community Chest.

He served on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, from 1951 to 1965 and was president of that board from 1959 to 1961. He was a former director of the UW-Madison Foundation and a director of the UW-Oshkosh Foundation.

Steiger was former director and chairman of the board of the Oshkosh National Bank; former director of the Wisconsin National Life Insurance Co., the Bergestrom Paper Co. And the Arkwright-Boston Insurance Co., Boston, Mass.; director of the Winnebago County Fair Association; president and director of the Steiger-Rathke Development Co., and board member and president of the Oshkosh Foundation.

He was chairman of the board and a trustee of St. John's Military Academy, Delafield, a former trustee of the Bay- Lakes Council, Boy Scouts of America Executive Board, and the Paine Art Center and Arboretum.

Steiger has been a director if the Mercy Hospital Lay Advisory Board, was a life member of the Wisconsin Alumni Association, a member of the Bascom Hill Society of the University of Wisconsin, the board of trustees of Evergreen Manor, and Sigma Nu fraternity.

He was one of the organizers of the Winnebago County Dairy Herd Improvement Association and a life member of the American Guernsey Cattle Club.

Throughout his career Steiger received many awards and honors. He was named "Outstanding Boss of the Year" by the Junior Chamber of Commerce In 1950 and received the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1960.

Three honors came in 1966 when Ripon College Founders Day Award for Recognition if Outstanding Service to Education, an honorary doctor of laws degree from UW-Madisonand the Distinguished Service Citation from the Wisconsin State University/Oshkosh Citizens Advisory Council.

He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Twin Lakes Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1970, the Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Alumni Association In 1971 and the Chancellor's Medal from UW-Oshkosh In 1977 for outstanding contributions to higher education to Wisconsin.

In 1981 Steiger received the National Medal of Honor from the Daughters of the American Revolution and in 1982 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Old Boys Association of the St. John's Milirary Academy.

Among his membership were the American Legion and its Last Man's Club; the Elks Club; the Oshkosh Yacht Club; the Inland Lakes Yachting Association, of which he was a life member; the Oshkosh Country Club; the Oshkosh Powe Boat Club; the Union League Club, Chicago; and La Cumbre Golf and Country Club, Santa Barbara, Calif.
