U.S. Senator. After graduating from Dartmouth College New Hampshire, in 1791, he studied law, admitted to the bar in 1793 and then practiced law in Randolph, Vermont. He was prosecuting attorney for Orange County, (1803-12) and a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1805-12). In 1813, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1817, when he resigned. He was then appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court of Vermont, serving (1817-21) and member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1823-24). He was again elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the United States Senate, serving (1825-31). After his term, he engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death at age 74.
