U.S. Continental Congressman. He was justice of the peace of Greenville County, South Carolina, a member of the Provincial House of Commons, in 1772 and deputy secretary of the Province, in 1772. In addition, he was a delegate to the First and Second Provincial Congresses, (1775-76) a member of the first general assembly, in 1776 and served in the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1778-81, 84). In 1784, he was elected a member to the Continental Congress, serving until 1787. After his term he served in the South Carolina State Senate, in 1798.
