1LT Burge was a co-pilot on B-24 Liberator #41-28776 for the 66th Bomber Squadron of the 44th Bomber Group "The Flying 8 Balls", stationed out of Shipdham Airfield in England. On 11 July 1944, while his crew was on their 18th mission, flying as the lead plane in formation, the plane was forced to leave formation Ghent, Belgium. About 5 miles from Dunkirk, France, the crew was forced to bail out. 8 crew members perished sometime after the bailout, including 1LT Burge. He was initially buried at St Omer Memorial Cemetery, in Pas Calais, France, grave #214, but was re-interred to be near his parents, Homer and Lucy, after the war. He also left behind his wife, Melba.
