U.S. Congressman. He attended University of Alabama and during World War I, he served as a Private in Troop A, 2nd Cavalry, U.S. Army, overseas. After the war, he became an accountant at Sarasota, Florida, (1920-33) and was president-director of Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus, (1933-48). He also was chairman of the Democratic executive committee of Sarasota County, (1935-52) and a member of the Florida State House of Representatives, (1949-52). In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 82.
