U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Middlebury College, in 1823, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Addison County, Vermont. Moving to Centerville, Michigan, in 1838, he held several local offices and was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives in 1842. In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. After leaving Congress, he relocated to California, in 1850 and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 68.
