U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law departments of the University of Wisconsin, in 1879, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Madison, Wisconsin. Moving to San Jose, California, in 1887, he engaged in fruit raising, mining and with his brother became publisher-proprietor of the San Jose Daily Mercury Herald, in 1901. In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1919. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business interests until his death.
