U.S. Congressman. Born in Davidson County, Tennessee, he graduated from the University of Nashville, in 1826, studied law, was admitted to bar in 1827 and practiced law in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition, he was a newspaper editor and a Minister to Portugal, (1841-44). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his previous business interests and was a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1860-61). He died at age 69 while on a visit to his brother’s home in St. Louis, Missouri.
