John atteneded Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney, Nebraska. He taught in Alma Nebraska before he moved to California. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was married to Dorothy Keens from Kearney until her death in 1961. He married Irene Strinati Parker in 1968. He taught in California for many years and served as principal for the many of these years.
