Julie Chetlain-GALENA, Ill., Oct. 27. [Special] Mrs. Louis Chetlain, for sixty one years a resident of Galena, died at the Chetlain homestead near Galena at 6 o'clock this morning, aged 88 years. Julie Hombert Droz was born at Ligniere, Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland, Dec. 5, 1799. At the age of 20 she was married to Louis Chetlain of the same canton. In 1821 Mr. Chetlain and his young wife joined the colony of French Swiss (Huguenots), 200 in number, who emigrated to the Red River of the North, British America, under the auspices of Lord Selkirk. After two years' stay there Mrs. Chetlain with twelve other colonists and their families, started for the United States going overland to the headwaters of the Minnesota River and then floating in canoes to St. Louis reaching there in the autumn of 1823. In the spring of 1826, Mr. Chetlain and family accompanied Col. Henry Gratiot, Indian agent, to the lead mines of the northwest, and settled at the Gratiot Grove agency, near Galena. After the Black Hawk war of 1832, the Chetlains removed to the vicinity of the City of Galena where the family now lives. Mr. Chetlain died in died in 1872, aged 77 from the result of an accident. Mrs. Chetlain was widely known in the Northwest. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Galena 52 years. She leaves six of her eleven children; Frederick Chetlain of Galena, General Augustus Chetlain of Chicago, Mrs. Capt. Drenning of Galena, Mrs. Titus H. Davis of Grundy Centre, Ia., Mrs. David N. Corwith of Galena, and Henry B. Chetlain of Galena, and 25 grandchildren.]
