WELLS, Maine — Daniel (Maurice) Chase of Wells, Maine, passed away Thursday, June 23, at York Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Amesbury, Mass., Nov. 1, 1927, the son of Harold Daniel and Ora Alice (Wormwood) Chase. His folks had moved temporarily to Amesbury so that his father could work in an automobile factory.
The family moved back to Wells, and he attended Wells schools. He served in the Army from his induction until the reduction in force in 1947.
He married the love of his life, Elsie Elizabeth Annis, on June 15, 1947, at the Second Congregational Church in Wells. At her death they had been married 56 years.
After the war he became apprenticed to Jarvis Shibles of North Berwick through the GI Bill. He worked for Mr. Shibles for more than 20 years until his retirement. He then went to work for Littlefield Brothers of North Berwick as a superintendent and estimator. When Littlefield Brothers was incorporated in 1979 he became a corporator. He retired in the late 1980s due to ill health.
He served on several building committees, including the New Wells High School in 1978. He worked on and supervised many public buildings erected in the area.
He was a Past Master of Ocean Lodge #142 AF&AM.
Dan was always interested in sports and hunting. His high school sports career was cut short when Wells suspended sports for the duration of the war after his freshman year. He loved helping his Dad, who guided sports at his hunting camp in Upton. He was an avid rabbit hunter, particularly with his beloved Beagle "Kelly." He enjoyed harness racing and following his father's mare, "Miss Mt. Hope."
He was one of the founders of the Wells Little League in 1957 with Merle Chase, Marion Oliver, Millard Adams and Margaret Grant. He was one of the original coaches and coached the Braves for many years. When he retired from coaching he was an umpire for a few more. He was a fixture on the sidelines of Wells High sports for many years, enjoying the exploits of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed following the Patriots and the Red Sox.
Dan lived in the house built by his great grandfather in 1872 on his great-great-grandfather's land. He enjoyed working on his farm with his cattle and in his fields. He spent many winters cutting wood for the family hearth.
After his retirement he liked to travel in his motorhome, in caravan with his brothers and their wives. They spent the traveling season crisscrossing the country, seeing the sights.
His focus was his family and the children. He recently put in a road at his own expense so that his grand children could have houselots.
He was predeceased by his wife; his parents; his brothers Ray, Merle, Forrest and Carl; and his sisters, Marion Oliver and Emily Chick.
He is survived by his sister, Marlene Jane Clem of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; his children, Thomas and his wife Carol of Acton, Kathleen and her husband Glenn Winslow of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Jack and his wife Arlene of Wells, Paul and his wife Debbie of Wells, Glen of Conway Arkansas, and Stephen and his wife Diane of Wells; 17 grand children; and 18 great-grandchildren.
