Civil War Union Brevet Major General. A 1829 graduate of the United States Military Academy and veteran of the Mexican War, he was serving as Assistant Quartermaster General of the United States Regular Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was then promoted to Colonel, and made Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Ohio. On March 13, 1865 he recieved the brevets of Brigadier General, US Regular Army and Major General, US Regular Army for "faithful and efficient services in the Quartermaster's Department during the war". He retired at this Colonel's rank in 1869.
