National League umpire. Williams played Minor League Baseball from 1953 to 1956 as a pitcher with the Bakersfield Indians, Idaho Falls Russets, Visalia Cubs, Bakersfield Boosters, and Stockton Ports. He finished his Minor League career with a 36-41 record and a 4.83 ERA. He began umpiring in 1969 in the Pioneer League, and also worked in the Midwest League, Texas League, and International League. Williams umpired in the National League for 6 seasons from 1972 to 1977. He was the first African American umpire to work in the National League, and just the second in Major League history after Emmett Ashford of the American League.
