US Senator. Born in Westborough, Massachusetts, he graduated from Brown University Rhode Island, in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Skowhegan, Maine, in 1815. He was a member Maine State House of Representatives, (1823-31) and a justice of the supreme judicial court of Maine, (1831-34). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Peleg Sprague, serving until 1841. He also was the chairman on the Committee on Patents and Patent Office and framer of the bill for the reorganization of the United States Patent Office in 1836. After his term, he resumed the practice of law in Thomaston, Maine, until his death at age 84.
