U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williams College Massachusetts, in 1818, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1821 and practiced law in Rochester, New York. He was prosecuting attorney of Monroe County in 1826 and elected as an Adams to the Twentieth Congress, serving (1827-29). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1838, when elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving (1839-45). Not a candidate for reelection, he was appointed Minister to Prussia, serving (1850-53). Retiring from public service, he engaged in literary pursuits until his death at age 63.
