US Congressman. He was elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1867 to 1871.

Excerpt from The Cambria Tribune, Johnstown, PA, Thursday, 20 Aug 1885:
"Died in the 1st Ward on the 20th, Daniel Johnson Morrell, a descendent of 3 brothers who left England for New England. His ancestors were Normans who followed William the Conqueror. From the 3 brothers are deceased all Morrells and Morrills in the U S today. Two brothers settled in Massachusetts and the other on Long Island. David Morrell, grandfather to Daniel, lived in Maine. 102 years ago, Thaddeus Morrell was born. At the age of 23, he married Susannah Ayres. They were married 68 years and were buried on the same day. The family record reads: Thaddeus Morrell, born 12 Jul 1783, died 6 Jun 1874, aged 90 years, 10 months, 24 days; Susannah Ayres, born 22 May 1786, died 7 Jun 1874, aged 88 years, 16 days. The were married 17 Feb 1806 and buried 10 Jun 1874. Daniel Johnson Morrell, the deceased, was their 7th child, born 8 Aug 1821. Interment at Sandyvale on Monday. "
