U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York City, in 1818, he became a successful merchant and was president of the New York City Chamber of Commerce. In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was again president of the New York City Chamber of Commerce, Central Park commissioner and president of the Merchants Clerks’ Savings Bank. He also was collector of the Port of New York, (1869-70) and naval officer of customs, (1870-71). His younger brother was Congressman Joseph Grinnell.
