U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Harvard College in 1774, he was a school teacher, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Dedham, Massachusetts in 1781. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, in 1788 and a member of the Massachusetts convention for the ratification of the Federal Constitution in 1788. In 1789, he was elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the First to the Third Congresses and as a Federalist to the Fourth Congress, serving until 1797. After his term, he resumed the practice of law, was a member of the Governor’s council, (1798-1800) and president of Harvard University in 1804. He died form failing health issues at age 50.
