US Congressman. He was born in Cherry Valley, New York, and pursued classical studies before attending and graduating from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, in 1833. While at Hamilton College he was also a founding member of the Alpha Delta Phi Literary Society. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar and commenced to practicing law for a short time in Perrysburg, Ohio, and at his birthplace of Cherry Valley, New York. On May 15, 1839, he married Anna Clark in Cherry Valley, New York, and the couple had three children (Sarah was born in 1841, Francis W. was born in 1844, and Anna was born in 1857). He then decided to enter public service and he ran for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Republican, he then served New York's 19th District (Thirty-Fifth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from 1857 to 1859. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1858. After his term in the United States Congress expired on March 3, 1859, he was succeeded in office by United States Representative James Harper Graham. After his time in public service, he resumed his practice of law. He was also a successful writer and translator. He died suddenly in New York City at the age of 55 and was buried in the Cherry Valley Cemetery. His wife passed away in 1898 and she was buried with him.
