William Wallace Campbell

US Congressman. A member of the Native American Party (later known as the American or Know Nothing Party), he was elected to the US House of Representatives from New York's 6th district in 1844 and served for one term from March 1845 until March 1847. His father was a local judge and his paternal grandfather served as a colonel during the American Revolutionary War. He attended local schools and Union College in Schenectady, New York, graduating in 1827. He then took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1831 and established a law practice in New York City, New York. After he returned from Congress, he became a justice of the Superior Court of New York City from 1849 to 1855, a justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1857 to 1865, and a judge ex officio of the New York Court of Appeals in 1865. In 1869 he was elected as a Republican to the New York State Assembly from Otsego County, 1st district. In addition to his involvement in politics, he was a historical author whose works include "The Border Warfare of New York During the Revolution: The Annals of Tryon County" (1831, republished in 1992) and "An Historical Sketch of Robin Hood and Captain Kidd" (1853).
