U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Williams College, in 1869, from Harvard Law School in 1871, was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced to practice law in New York City. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1882-83), New York State comptroller, (1884-87) and Mayor of Brooklyn, (1888-91). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of David A. Boody, serving until he resigned in 1892. He then served as Railroad Commissioner of New York State, (1892-97) and continued the practice of law. He died at age 88 while on a visit to Canada. U.S. Congressman Hamilton Fish, Jr. was his grandson.
