U.S. Senator. He attended Iowa University and during the Civil War, served as a Private in the Union Army. After the war, he studied law at West Union, Iowa, was admitted to the bar in 1869 and practiced law. Moving to Nebraska, in 1884, he was appointed judge of the district court of the ninth judicial district of Nebraska, (1891-93). In 1893, he was elected as a Populist to the United States Senate, serving until 1899. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed judge of the district court of the ninth judicial district of Nebraska. He soon resigned when appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Monroe L. Hayward and served (1899-1901). He then resumed the practice of law, was again elected judge of the district court of the ninth judicial district of Nebraska in 1917 and served until his death at age 76.
