Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Piermont, New Hampshire, at the start of the Civil War he was lawyer in practice in Lake County, Illinois, when he enlisted in the Union and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. As a Captain at the Battle of Shiloh he received four wounds, but refused to leave the field and led his company in the final charge. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel for his gallant conduct, he was soon afterward was commissioned Colonel in command of the 15th Illinois Infantry for his gallantry at the Battle of the Hatchie. At Champion Hills, he received three wounds, but continues to command a brigade in other actions including the Atlanta Campaign. For meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he resumed his legal career and was three times a delegate to National Democratic conventions.
