He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, register of deeds for Jo Daviess County and receiver of the United States land office in Dixon. Moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1855, he engaged in the lumber business and was a member of the Minnesota State constitutional convention in 1857. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the member of the Minnesota State House of Representatives and Postmaster of Minneapolis, from 1867, until his death at age 63. The City of Aldrich, Minneapolis, was named in his honor.
