Capt. Seaborn Jones Benning was the only son of Gen. Henry Lewis Benning, for whom Ft. Benning, GA. is named. Seaborn continued to use the title "Capt." after the Civil war due to his wounds. In 1862 his mother Mary Howard Benning traveled to the Battle of Sharpsburg site to bring his badly wounded body home; Shrapnel disfigured his face. Seaborn never married and seldom left his parents' house.
