Professional Baseball Player and Umpire. Johnstone broke into professional baseball as a pitcher in the Western League in 1894, pitching for Detroit and Milwaukee that season. In 1895, we won 20 games for St. Paul. Johnstone later pitched for Newark in the Atlantic League, Toronto in the Eastern League, Portland in the New England League, and the Connecticut State League's Derby club through 1899. He became an umpire in 1900 and officiated games in the Southern League until he joined the American League umpiring staff in 1902. Johnstone worked 140 games that season before jumping to the National League in 1903. He remained in the NL through 1912 and was assigned to work the 1906 and 1909 World Series. In 1915, he umpired in the Federal League during its second and final major league season. In his 12-year career, Johnstone officiated 1,736 major league games plus 12 more in the World Series. He also worked as a metal molder and patternmaker and in retirement invented a new lighter and more protective catcher's and umpire's mask, called the "Original Full Vision Mask."
