U.S. Congressman. He attended Centre College Kentucky and with the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army, serving under General N.B. Forrest on parole on the borders of Alabama. After the war, he graduated from Oakland University Mississippi, in 1867, studied law, graduated from the University of Virginia, 1869, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Lexington, Missouri. He was City Attorney of Lexington, in 1872 and prosecuting attorney of Lafayette County, Missouri, in 1874. In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 72.
