U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of Mississippi, in 1859, Oakland College in 1861 and during the Civil War served as a private in Company A, 18th Mississippi Infantry, plus the Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced the practice of law in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was a member of the Mississippi State Senate, (1875-77) and Mississippi Attorney General, (1877-85). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1901. After his term, he served as served as division counsel for the Southern Railway Company and was a member of the Mississippi Code Commission. He also practiced law until his death at age 80.
