Mrs. Rexford, a descendant of Chief Justice John Marshall, was credited with being the first woman to land on Utah Beach after the D-Day invasion. She worked her way across Europe as a Red Cross worker in a mobile canteen unit that served U.S. and allied troops after battles in France, Belgium and Germany. Her experiences were described by her husband Oscar Rexford in a book titled "Battlestars and Doughnuts." In 1994, just two years before her death, she was asked by the French government to lay a wreath during the memorial services at Utah Beach in Normandy. She remained active in the St. Louis J.S. McDonnell USO until her death.
