Alabama Governor, U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Georgia, Emory and Henry College Virginia and received degrees from both institutions. He was a successful businessman, cotton manufacturer and banker, serving on the Commissioners Court of Barbour County Alabama, (1874-80). He also was president of the Birmingham Corn and Flour Mills, the Avondale Cotton Mills and the Railroad Commission of Alabama, (1905- 06). In 1906, he was elected as a Democrat the 33rd Governor of Alabama, serving until 1911. During his tenure, reforms to improve education were made, the Child Labor Law was revised, the State Board of Assessors was formed, and an extensive series of railroad legislation was passed. After leaving office, he returned to his various business ventures and was appointed to the U.S. Senate on March 5, 1920 and served until November 2, 1920. Retiring from politics, he resumed his business pursuits until his death at age 78.
