Stephen F. Reppert
Stephen F. Reppert, 83, of W. Olive St., Bridgeport, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 12, 2004, at the residence of his son in Bridgeport following an extended illness.
He was born, Sept. 2, 1921, at Scott's Run, near Morgantown, a son of the late Edmond H. Reppert and the late Beulah Getty Reppert.
Mr. Reppert is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Reppert and wife, Betty, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Clifton E. Reppert and wife, Maria, of Bridgeport; three daughters, Susan R. McElroy of Bridgeport, Sarah R. Lowndes and husband, Bladen, of Columbia, Md., and Janie R. Porter and husband, Robert, of Fairmont; two brothers, Edmund H. Reppert Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Saugerties, N.Y., and Alfred R. Reppert and wife, Elizabeth, of Clarksburg; one sister, Nancy Reppert Jonathan of Indianapolis, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles Hare Reppert, and one sister, Virginia Galvin.
Mr. Reppert was a graduate of Flemington High School and a faithful alumnus of Princeton University, having graduated in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He owned and operated a coal tipple in Buckhannon for several years and later founded Reppert Fuels Inc. in 1964.
He was a devoted and faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksburg where he served in many capacities, not only in the church locally, but for the glory of God in the larger governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church as well. In the Presbytery of Grafton, he was the longtime Stated Clerk and served on several committees. It was during this time that he was given his much-loved nickname, "Mr. Presbyterian." In the Presbytery of West Virginia, he served on the Committee on Ministry, the Committee on Preparation for Ministry and the Judicial Commission. He served as the Stated Clerk and on various committees for the Synod of Appalachia. He also served on the Permanent Judicial Commission in the Synod of the Trinity and was a commissioner to the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church of the United States of America in the 1970's.
Steve was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II from 1943 to 1946. During his service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Area Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with one star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. He was a 50-year member of the Yates Masonic Lodge 163 AF & AM in Flemington, as well as the West Virginia Consistory of the 18th and 32nd Degree Scottish Rites Bodies of Wheeling and Nemesis Shriners AAONMS of Parkersburg.
Mr. Reppert was best known as a longtime supporter and trustee of Davis & Elkins College from 1975 until 1993, serving first on the Development Committee from 1973 until 1975, and then on the Business and Finance Committee from 1975 until 1993. He established the Reppert Endowment for the Chaplaincy in July 2002, an endowment which supported the campus chaplain, staff and all religious programs offered by the college. He continued contributing to that fund until the time of his death.
He was an avid WVU Mountaineer sports fan and enjoyed being in the outdoors where he would fish, hunt and spend time at his cabin in Romney.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Ave., Bridgeport, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Monday, Mr. Reppert will lie in state at the First Presbyterian Church, 175 W. Main St., Clarksburg, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. in the church with Dr. Eric M. Faust presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.
