Following her tragic death, there was a push for better legislation to protect children from sex offenders in the United Kingdom. The resultant legislation was dubbed "Sarah's Law." Whiting was later convicted of abduction and murder using forensic evidence and sentenced to life in prison. He had been first convicted of a sexual assault on a eight-year-old girl in March of 1995 and served two-and-half-year sentence before release. "Sarah's Law" was modeled after the "Megan's Law" in the United States.
