Dr. Robert Young 'Bob' Cannon
Dr. Robert Young 'Bob' Cannon, 83, of Auburn died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Auburn. There will be a reception held immediately after the memorial service in the social hall at St. Michaels.
Dr. Cannon was born September 11, 1917 in Boise, Idaho to parents Dr. Clawson Young and Winnifred Morrell Cannon. He was the great-grandson of Brigham Young and the grandson of George Quayle Cannon and Carolyn Young Cannon.
He earned a B.S. from Iowa State University in 1939, a M.S. from Ohio State University in 1940. Following 5 years in the United States Army during World War II, he received a PhD in Bacteriology/Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin. He joined the faculty of Alabama Polytechnic Institute in the Fall of 1948 where he served on the faculty in the Department of Animal and Dairy Science until retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1982.
Dr. Cannon was among the founders of the Auburn Cotillion Club and the Fasching Society. He was a member of the Board of Directors and Secretary of the Lee County Chapter of the American Heart Association, the Auburn University Club, Saugahatchee Country Club, and served as Secretary of the Georgia Alabama Senior Golf Association (GALA). For their community service Dr. and Mrs. Cannon were recipients of the City of Auburn and Auburn Chamber of Commerce Eagle Award.
Dr. Cannon is survived by his wife, Lee; two daughters, Emilie Cannon Johnson and her husband,Randall of Jasper and Leigh Cannon Allbrook and her husband, William of Auburn; son, Robert Young Cannon Jr. and his wife, Ruth of Clarkston, Wash.; six grandchildren, Christopher and Keith Johnson of Jasper, Kenneth and Emilie Cannon of Clarkston, Wash, and Samantha and Kate Allbrook of Auburn; two brothers, Clawson Cannon presently of Switzerland and Rowland Cannon of Salt Lake City; one sister, Winnifred Jardine of Salt Lake City, Utah; and many friends in the Auburn community and the state of Alabama.
