President of Uruguay. Bordaberry Arocena served as President of Uruguay from 1972 to 1976. He came from a wealthy ranching family and managed the family ranch after the death of his father. Bordaberry Arocena came into politics after Uruguay's economy took a hit in the 1950s. The economic crisis brought the National party, which he was a member of, into power. Bordaberry Arocena served in several government positions during the 1960s. In 1969 he switched over to the Colorado party and became Minister of Agriculture and Livestock under President Jorge Pacheco Areco. Bordaberry Arocena was elected president in 1971 after a trouble filled election. In March of 1972 he suspended the constitution and individual liberties to deal with the terrorist activities of the Tupamaros guerrillas. By the next year, Bordaberry Arocena had become a "puppet" of the military and control of the country had passed to a seven-man National Security Council. Pressured by the military, he later abolished the Congress, banned all political parties, and okayed press censorship and political repression. On June 12, 1976, Bordaberry Arocena was ousted by the military and he returned to ranching. In 2006 he was arrested and charged with involvement in human rights violations. Bordaberry was convicted in 2010 and was serving his 30 year house arrest sentence when he passed away.
