Duane was born in West Virginia and left with his parents at a very early age. He spent his youth in Memphis, TN, Pickwick Dam, TN, Iuka, MS, and Wilmington, NC. After graduating high school, Duane attended and graduated from the Marine Engineering Training School in Baltimore, MD and received his marine engineer's license to work aboard ships traveling the world. He made many trips as a merchant marine aboard ships carrying ammunition to Viet Nam and was slightly injured when his ship hit a mine. Duane later worked on ships lying in port while their regular engineers went home to visit their families.
