U.S. Senator. Moving to Ohio, as a young man, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After war, he was employed as President by the Sandusky Tool Company and he relocated to Arkansas when appointed President of the Arkansas Railway Company. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1879. Not a candidate for reelection, he engaged in cattle raising and mining in New Mexico and Colorado, then settled in California, until his death at age 74.
