From NEHGS Cemetery Inscriptions, he is listed as such:
Mowry, Henry C. Died in Chicago, Ill., Nov. 5, 1876 Aged 3 years 8 months 21 days. However, it would be strange for a three year old who died in Chicago to be buried in Colrain, or even memorialized in a Cenotaph.
It is almost certain that this is the Civil War Veteran, Henry Clay Mowry, of Plainfield,IL, being memorialized. And the true reading of the inscription is "Aged 34 years 2 months 21 days", which would track with Henry's birth date. In Henry's pension papers, it states that Sarah was trying to claim pension funds due her until Nov 5,1876 (date of his death).
He is therefore a son, rather than grandson, of John Mowry and Cordelia (Deane) Mowry.
He married Sarah J Handy on Nov 12,1873 at Colrain,MA. Sarah lived with her sister Lovina in Chicago following Henry's death. Lovina died Sep 14,1910 and is buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago. Sarah is buried there, too, AND other Plainfield Civil War soldiers are buried there. It is possible that Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago is also Henry's true resting place.
Henry and Sarah had no children.
