U.S. Senator. Born the cousin of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, he graduated from Yale College in 1788, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1791 and commenced to practice in Norwich, Connecticut. He was attorney for New London County (1814-19), a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1817, a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1818 and a member of the Connecticut State Senate in 1819. In 1819, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1825. After leaving the Senate, he was a judge of the Connecticut State Supreme Court (1826-29), Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut (1831-34) and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1833.
