Connecticut Governor. He graduated from Yale University in 1878, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Hartford, Connecticut. Entering into his father’s manufacturing business, he served as president of the Hartford Woven Wire Mattress Company, (1886-1907). He served as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives (1899-1901), was a member of the Connecticut State Senate (1901-02) and was Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut (1903-05). In 1905, he was elected as a Republican the 44th Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1907. During his term, legislation passed that banned bakeries from operating below ground level, and a bill was launched that systematized the operation of automobiles. Also enacted the fortification of the public’s safety from private enterprises and public officials’ fraudulent practices, plus the failure of non-support of wives was met with jail sentences. After leaving office, he returned to his business activities and served as president of the Hartford Water Board, until his death from respiratory failure.
