Wisconsin Governor, U.S. Congressman. He attended Wesleyan University New York, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1842 and was Wayne County District Attorney, (1847-50). Moving to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate, (1853, 55). In 1855, he was elected the first Republican and 5th Governor of Wisconsin, serving until 1858. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he moved to Arizona in 1863 and was the first Attorney General of Arizona, (1864-66). In 1867, he was elected as an Independent to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. After his term, he was Arizona State Secretary, (1869-76). Retiring from public service, he engaged in business until his death at age 62.
