U.S. Congressman. Relocating to California, in 1850, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Suisun City. He was a member of the California State Assembly, (1865-67) and elected as a Republican to the 42nd Congress, serving (1871-73). After his term, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, serving (1876-78). He was then appointed Chief Justice of the Territorial Utah Supreme Court, but declined and practiced law until his death at age 43.
