Born John Joseph McNamee, he attended the University of San Francisco and was a key contributor on Pete Newell's Dons' squad which capture the 1949 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), as they upset Loyola of Chicago 48 to 47. Selected by Rochester during the 1st round 9th overall pick) of the 1950 NBA Draft, he played at the center and forward position for two seasons (1950 to 1952) with the Royals and Baltimore Bullets. He experienced a championship season during his rookie year, as the Royals defeated the New York Knicks 4 games to 3 to capture the NBA Title. During that postseason, McNamee contributed 12 points with 9 assists in 13 games. Following his basketball career, he worked in sales. He was inducted into the University of San Francisco Athletics Hall of Fame in 1969.
