Michael Smith went by "Swing" Smith. He was the son of Eleazar Smith and Rebecca Newkirk Swing. He married Nancy Bateman on October 21, 1862 in Illinois. They were the parents of Henry Swing Smith, Harriette Smith, Jennie Smith, Eleazar Smith and Rebecca Smith.

Their daughter, Jennie, was born in a covered wagon near Kansas City during their migration from Illinois to Kansas. As they got to Lawrence or Florence (two versions of the story) one of the horses took sick and died, they did not have enough money for another horse so Swing tied the single tree so the horse would pull the load and he walked and held up the neck yoke the rest of the way to their Butler County homestead.
