The 1850 US Census would find Emily, Robert and 2 daughters (Martha and Mary (5 and 3) either visiting or boarding with her parents' family, in Flint River, Des Moines County, where Mr. Leffler was identified as a lawyer and Robert as a farmer. The census-taker wrote the Chalfant surname as "Chaffant", so their record is found more easily by searching for her father, Isaac Leffler. That Census preceded the Civil War by a decade or so, so occurred before West Virginia had split apart from Virginia over issues related to that War. Thus, in 1850, they still reported themselves as born in Virginia.

There are some confusions about her parentage. Was Isaac Leffler her father? That's backed circumstantially (not the same as proof) by her new family being seen with an Isaac Leffler in the 1850 Census. However, an old book from 1910, written fifty years after that Cansus, instead lists William Leffler as Emily's father. (That's on p.230 of "The Bromwell Genealogy", by Henrietta Elizabeth Bromwell.)

Regardless of who her father might have been, she descended of a Jacob Leffler (on p. 222) who migrated through Hagerstown, MD, on his way to Washington County, Pennsylvania. Isaac was Jacob's eldest, while William, b. 1800, was seventh of eleven children.

Isaac went to Virginia where he served in the legislature. He left for Burlington, Iowa, in 1835. William also went to Virginia, where he owned slaves, then left for Burlington in 1836, a year later.

Places are confused as well. Whoever answered questions at Isaac's house in 1850 gave Isaac's birthplace in "Virginia" (now West Virginia), while the Bromwells gave his birthplace as Pennsylvania (page 22). In the 1850 Census, William reported his birth as in Pennsylvania, yet others would say it was West Virginia. Find A Grave contributor
