James was a member of Co. C, 16th Maine Regiment, in the Civil War. In the 1850 census, he was living with his family in Letter G Range 2, Aroostook County, Maine. In the home were his parents John (53), Olive (42), Thomas (22), Charles S. (18), James , John O. (14), Samuel (12), Effa (8), Josiah (6), Dorcas (4).

According to "US Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, James resided in Maysville, Me. He was 28 when he enlisted in Co. C. of the 16th Maine Infantry Regiment on August 14, 1862. He mustered out (died) on October 28, 1862, at Smoketown, MD.

According to family information and research, James was born in Aroostook, Maine, about 1830. He married Mary Ann Moran on June 29, 1855, in Maysville, Aroostook County, Maine. Mary Ann was born in New Brunswick.

James and Mary Ann had the following children: 1)Charles Allen, b. April/1856 in Maysville, 2)Alice A., b. August/1/1857, 3)Roselthe, b. 1858, 4)Jessie Adeline, b. May 27, 1861, and James Worden, b. Feb. 22, 1863.

In an inventory form for State Historic Sites of Maryland, it states "Heavy fighting took place along the lower portion of the (Smoketown) road in the morning hours of that day. Later, according to Antietam park rangers, a Union field hospital was set up at Smoketown, a settlement which was located at the northern terminus of the road."

James is buried in the Antietam National Battlefield Cemetery, Site 3188.
