Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born Landau, Bavaria he was educated at the universities of Munich and Heidelberg. Immigrating to the United States, he practiced law in his adopted city of Milwaukee. During the Civil War served as colonel and commander of the 27th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted brigadier general, US Volunteers on March 26, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the campaign against the city of Mobile and its defenses".
