Major League Baseball Player. He played Major League baseball for fourteen seasons (1936 to 1949) as an outfielder with the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns and Boston Braves. Spending most of his career with the Indians, he hit 194 home runs and posted a .293 lifetime batting average. In 1938, he batted .343 (second in the American League), registered 112 runs batted in, and led the American League with 18 triples. A broken ankle ended his major league career in 1949. He was 60 years old when he succumbed to a heart attack.
