Canadian Politician. Served as Premier of Nova Scotia from June 11, 1993 to March 20, 1997. Born in New South Wales on May 28, 1932, and immigrated to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1967. After his arrival he became a a valuable contribution to the city as a doctor, community leader, and Chairman of the Dartmouth School Board. He also helped to establish day care centers and drug addiction programs in the city. In 1985 he became the Mayor of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and served two terms until he left office in 1992 to pursue leadership of the Liberal Party. He won the leadership that same year on the second ballot and then formed his goverment. On May 25, 1993, Savage led the party to victory and was elected to the riding of Dartmouth South. On June 11th of the same year he took office as Premier of Nova Scotia. In his leadership he was successful in eliminating the budget deficit that was at $617 million when he took office and the highest in the provinces history since 1978, but was under control by 1996 to 1997. He also helped to fix the unemployment rate, the Workers' Compensation Fund, the Teachers' Pension Fund, the Pharmacare Program for Seniors, and reducing landfill waste, to recycling of bottles and tires. In 1996 and 1997 the province's debt was paid down by $170 million, becoming the first time since the provinces overall level of debt had been reduced since 1965. On March 20, 1997, Savage announced his retirement as Liberal Party leader and as Premier of Nova Scotia. He was awarded the Order of Canada in May 2003. He died on May 13, 2003, at the age of 70.
