US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives from Michigan's 1st district for one term from March 1861 until March 1863. Born in Lowville, New York he attended public schools up to the age of 12, when he attended the Lowville Academy. He then moved his family to Manchester, Michigan and at the age of 15, he began the study of law with Stacy & Beaman, at Tecumseh, Michigan and was admitted to the bar in October 1847. He began practicing law in Tecumseh and in the summer of 1847 he moved to Kent County, Michigan and engaged in farming and lumbering. In 1848 he returned to Manchester, Michigan and the following year he was elected Justice of the Piece, and served for four years while owning and operating a farm. In 1852 he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan and continued his law practice. In 1852 he served as the clerk of Washtenaw County, Michigan and Probate Judge in 1856. In 1860 he ran as the Republican candidate for Congress and won, but was defeated for re-election in 1862. Upon leaving Congress, he returned to Ann Arbor and continued to practice law until his death there at the age of 57.
