U.S. Congressman. While attending Olivet College, he served as clerk of Genesee County, (1905-12). He graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, in 1912, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Flint, Michigan. He was assistant prosecuting attorney of Genesee County, (1913-17), a member of the Flint School Board, (1924-34) and a member of the Republican Michigan State central committee, (1925-30). In 1935, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fourth Congress, serving until 1937 and elected to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving (1939-53). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 86.
